Kerry isn’t graceful, but I think he’s a responsible guy. And in withdrawing from the Presidential race two years out, he’s done the responsible thing.

So thank you, Senator Kerry!

In 2004 we could have elected the responsible guy, or we sould have elected the guy with the great personality who you’s like to have a beer with.

Drink up.

Taking unpopular stands, for starters:

Staring down Richard Nixon when he helped organized Vietnam Veterans Against the War and not shrinking from that role when he came under attack for it in 2004 by the junkyard dogs of the right wing.

Staring down Ronald Reagan over the Iran-Contra cover-up, notably the laundering of CIA drug money.

Staring down George H.W. Bush over the same thing.

Trying to stare down George W. Bush over Iraq.

I’d really like to have an unspoken “man-law” of sort that says “You run once, if you lose, yer done, you can’t run again.”

I’m still concerned Gore will run again, and all people will remember about him is the personality of a cardboard box. The next President needs to be a real leader, he/she doesn’t have to be perfect at everything, but they need to unite the country to move in the positive direction, whatever that may be.

Michael:

Allow me to temper the off-the-cuff remarks in the post I put up immediately after the announcement.

John Kerry exemplifies the best in public service. The tears that he shed at his announcement were real and not just for the cameras.

He has proved to be enormously valuable to his nation and his state as a legislator with substantial experience who can put a human face on things and does not succumb to the flavor of the day. We are all the better that he will continue in that role.

Kerry was pretty much finished after his botched joke that implied our soldiers are idiots. He would only have contributed amiguity to Americans’ perceptions of the Democratic party.
