stfu? Nice debate going on here.
I suppose Dershowitz idea of bulldozing entire villages for the action of a few terrorists isn't an extreme idea or terrorism.

hey m,

before you post anti israel rhetoric here, i suggest you read the history of the region, which includes mass killings of jews by arabs pre 1948, the attacks by arab nations on the newly formed state of israel in 48, the wars of 56, 67. and 73, all initiated by the arab states.

stolen land?? water rights stolen??

if israel were the former soviet union or china, we wouldnt even be talking today...there would be no sign of a living palestinian anywhere in the region.

tell you what...when the arab countries who kicked out jews from their lands without compensation post 48, either offer compensation or allow the jews to return to those lands, maybe we can talk

till then...stfu

His book makes many good points. I think it is time for the debate to morph. Time to look into the illegal actions of the Israeli Govt. The taking of land and water rights with no due process, the sub-human treatment of anyone viewed as 'outsider' by the Israeli Govt. The problems in the middle east didn't invent themselves. The formation of Israeli was a huge mistake, at least the way it was carried out and the known death and cruelty that has resulted from it. Until there is a just solution there will be nothing but hatred and anger in the region. I fail to see why so many people think there is no reason to question the behavior of the state of Israel and their extremist leaders while blame is put squarely upon the people thrown off of their land and having a foreign Govt. set up walls and road blocks and checks and institute 'papers' and collect 'taxes' on your behalf. Israel must come to terms with their cruel and harmful behavior before their is peace. People don't blow themselves up because everything is healthy and fair and just. The problems must be addressed and not avoided or evn worse have those who bring the problem up called an anti-Semite ETC.

The terrorism that is used is ugly and inhumane just as the war machine that is used against them by Israel is. I agree with the definition that war is a rich countries method for terrorism. Tanks are no more just then road side bombs. Dropping bombs from 1,000 feet is not a ‘just’ weapon. Both sides are guilty in this ongoing parade of death.

Good point about Dershowitz, btw. The things he HAS said openly and without repentance are just as bad as the things Carter's words may have been interpreted to say, and for which he's apologizing. Ridiculous.

IMO, he doesn’t have an antisemitic bone in his body.

Actually, not many people know this, but his right femur is anti-semitic. The rest of him is fine, though.

It was good that Carter faced the criticism surrounding his book. I have always seen him as a champion of the underdog, a human rights advocate, rather than anti-semitic or bigotted. I was happy to see that he repudiated a questionable passage in his book that some interpreted as validating suicide bombings as an acceptable tactic. IMO, he doesn't have an antisemitic bone in his body.

I guess our alliance with Israel is sort of a sacred cow among many Americans. Israelis criticize their own government, but it is taboo for Americans. I do understand, however, why Israel decided it had to wall off the Palestinians, as suicide bombings have dropped 90%, since they did it. The situation has gotten worse with the Bush administration's lack of engagement in the peace process for the last 6 years.

I thought Carter's explanation and apology were reasonable.
I also agree with his concern that the Israeli developments in the West Bank are a road block to peace.

Of course Alan Dershowitz has never said something false or outlandish. I'm still waiting for Dershowitz' repentence.
