On Newspapers I Worked For

…they considered THIS KIND OF MISTAKE (read caption on photo on left) so bad it was called “a fatal.”

    They changed it already.

Maybe they thought his son was working in a restaurant in Viet Nam. Ever since I saw Anthony Bourdain’s show where he went to Viet Nam and tried the food there, I have been thinking that might be a great vacation.

Joe, your comment is actually more interesting than the story. What exactly was meant by “a fatal”? Was it an error so bad it meant a reprimand/firing? Or was it fatally embarrassing among colleagues?

As lots of folks here are news junkies, this would be an interesting bit of insight into the news business.

Given our highly politicized environment – and the nature of errors that seem to occur (for example, the mosque that was destroyed in the AP Jamil story, that Malkin shows pictures of still happily standing – and Hot Air’s current “deathwatch” to see if Editor and Publisher will even comment on this) – there seems to be less tolerance for such errors these days.

Joe, do you think when you were in the business things were saner?

You occasionally reference this period of your life, usually to illustrate a point, but I was just curious as to your thoughts.

  3. PatHMV says:

What did the caption say before they changed it?

  4. CStanley says:

PatMHV: It said that Webb’s son was currently serving in Vietnam instead of Iraq.

  5. Ryan S. says:

beat Republican George Allen in November’s elections.

I don’t much care for the word choice either. Sound like he beat up a senator. They should use the word defeated. /nitpick

    Joe–

Like Marlowecan, I’d be interested in knowing what the consequences would have been for a fatal error. Firing? Firing squad?

  7. Rudi says:

Yes Komrad Marlow, the MSM has lied along the lines of the AP Jamil stories. Im fact Baghdada is a wonderfull place and I highly recommend everyone go on the Malkin sponsored Tigris River cruise. It promises to be more fun than the Weakly Standards boring ocean cruise. Many CPA officials take their families on vacation to Kurdistan. I understand the GOAT is tender and delicious in Northern Iraq.
