Is it a good idea? As tempting as it sounds to me….I’m going to go with no. But I’m curious to hear other views.

What would it be good for? Israel is backed by the US. This makes it quite hopeless for any enemy nation to gain anything by attacking Israel. What could be gained by adding NATO? Nothing but diplomatic problems and a more complicated process of decision finding when the going gets tough. And there’s not much in it for NATO, either. The organisation would love the IDFs competence, sure, but where are the conflicts where the deployment of Israelis wouldn’t actually put fuel in the flames? Plus, European NATO countries don’t want to damage the independence of their foreign policies by being to closely associated with Israel. This would handicap the political influence they might have on arab countries and ruin any approach to be an arbiter for the peace process. You already nicely rounded that up, David.
Just one question: “It has more tanks than France or Germany”. Hmmm. Where did you find the numbers for Israel, David? This includes upgraded M60s?
Israel would never join a hostile European Organization who is basically praying daily for Israel’s demise so that they can once again do business with Arab nations without feeling guilty.
Everyone hates Israel. One just has to look at the books of the UN to see all the Attempted sanctions and resolutions passed against Israel over and over by who else…………EUROPE and its NATO members among others.
NO Israel would never give NATO the satisfaction of allowing them to tell them what to do. Israel trusts NATO about as much as they trust Abbas.
Simply ludicrous. Go read the attempted resolutions.
So the next time a katyusha is lobbed at Kiryat Shemona from South Lebanon, a kassam comes over the fence from Gaza into Sderot, or a nice boy from Ramallah shahids himself in a Jerusalem pizza parlor Israel gets to invoke Article 5 and call on the other NATO powers to defend it?
Not. Gonna. Happen.
