O’Reilly’s audience tends to make a retiree look like a young pup… and I know I’m personally looking forward to his increasingly antic behavior to try and court new viewers when the grim reaper comes a’callin.

Olbermann said this on his show: “Simply put, O’Reilly no longer deserves a space on the public stage.” Well, um, simply put, O’Reilly’s job is to create controversy, to attract attention, to get ratings. O’Reilly has his place on the public stage, and I’m not about to take seriously either his pronunciamentos or the indignant reaction of a competitor of his. Sure O’Reilly’s suggestions about the child were basically a titillation of his audience masquerading as a journalistic “raising of questions.” Reckless and unthinking comments, by most standards…. But O’Reilly has his audience, and Olbermann has his….

Or his boss likes the 1.8 ratings share (over 2 million viewers daily) that his show brings in. Maybe the ratings were slipping a bit, and thus the “war” with NBC, OR’s inappropriate comments about Shawn Hornbeck, and his improbable visit to The Colbert Report. OR thrives on outrage- remember the War on Christmas? Well it worked. This year stores like Walmart and Sears no longer said “Seasons Greetings”, lol.

Charles, “The parents’ mistake?” how about O’Reilly’s unsupported slander of the boy AND his parents? I’m a “free speech” kind of guy but vicious, unjustified, and hurtful comments that O’Reilly simply makes up so he can appear “edgy and provocative” are beyond the pale. A number of media and sports commentators have lost their jobs because of racial or gender-insenstive remarks and one can only assume that O’Reilly’s boss REALLY LIKES what O’Reilly has to say. One might also speculate whether there is something hidden in O’Reilly’s past that would encourage him to make such outrageous statements about a kidnapped and probably sexually abused child.
