Thanks, Michael. I've watched all the seasons and looked forward to this one. We remark often how in the desperation of the story line, we find ourselves rooting for Jack, even though he's violating the same rights I'm so adamant about defending. Oh well, it's fiction. Yet, the same dynamic is at work here, with many Americans willing to go along with the most dastardly violations of morality, decency and law because we feel threatened. The GOP has raised fearmongering to TV drama heights, working on the same storyline as 24. If we don't torture, imprison without rights, etc, something terrible will happen, and soon!

But just like in that episode, our assumptions can be totally wrong and our compromise of our principles based on fallacy or manipulation.

<blockquote>"There's been a certain amount of pop sociology in America that the Shia can't get along with the Sunni and the Shia in Iraq want to establish some kind of Islamic fundamentalist regime. There's been almost no evidence of that at all. Iraq's always been very secular."

24 Season 1 was great, watched it practically in one sitting on DVD. But it is one of those shows I refuse to watch on TV because I know I won't have a chance to watch all episodes in a row and I haven't picked it up on DVD past season 1 because I have so many DVDs that I own that I haven't had a chance to watch yet.
