I have thrown every obscenity at it and it doesn't block anything (Akismet has nabbed some harmless comments but for the most part does a great job). No one has ever left an obscene comment (except me, to check this), but I'd just delete it if they did. We're adults here. Is it possible to turn off the filter entirely and see if you have a problem? I don’t think it’s Wordpress. Pehaps it’s how you have it set up. And then there's the dishonest method of the 'moderation queue'. The system pretends towards the commenter that his post has been published, when in fact he and the mod are the only ones that may see it. Again, this happens without giving any feedback. Also, the system may automatically block a commenter when he repeatedly tries to get his post through (which may happen when he thinks there are network problems because of the missing feedback). Lastly, a mayor problem with Wordpress is that it gives moderators a lot of power, put has no mechanism whatever for the siteowner to check what the mods are doing. No log, no messages about commenters being blocked, no nothing. You just have to trust your people, even though not all will be up to the task.
