California is the world's 9th largest economy. Arnold is wisely thinking like the leader of a major country should. Example: by signing on to the Kyoto protocol, California can sell carbon credits on the London exchange, where they're worth 10 times as much as the Chicago exchange. California gets cash for every Prius, every windmill, every tree planted, every geothermal source developed. Other states will likely follow, and I hope my home state of Colorado will be one of the first. Our new Dem gov Ritter wants to make our windy eastern plains a center for windpower generation. Why shouldn't we join the new global carbon economy? And health care? California can't afford the 35% overhead of insurance company greed. Yes, they are leading the way, the way of government for the people. Bravo!

The Govs redistricting proposal was defeated at the polls because it seemed to favor white folks. He will likely fix this in the next iteration.
This reform will help the GOP who are increasingly sliding towards minority status.

The real national trend here is the incredible failure of the Bush administration. This isn't an act of political courage; he wouldn't be talking this way if Bush was riding high.

For anyone to claim that California is leading the way and America politics will be dominated by indepenents is dominate. California is a very deep blue state where the Republicans are going to fade out of existence.

Governor Schwarzenegger has just determine that the best way to get along in a Democratic party dominate state is to just give them whatever they want whenever they want it.

There article would have been stronger is it could cite proposals where Governor Schwarzenegger differs at all with the state Democratic Platform. An example would be if Governor Schwarzenegger is making any proposals to improve the poor state of the public schools that are counter to the demands of the teachers unions. Somehow I doubt such proposals will be made by a "centrist" governor.
