The surge in July and August worked so well (LOL) we will try it again. Maybe someone created a Powerpoint presentation to explain Iraq to W. I am waiting for him to strum another guitar while Balad burns again.

This is the way I have viewed this misbegotten strategy all along, Michael. It isn't about what can actually be achieved by sending more troops, but about avoiding a legacy for Bush of retreat and defeat in his administration's signature policy. The WH is using spin and distortion, as usual, to sell this idea. Even new Sec Def Gates lost his independence and became another Bush minion, whose new goal in life is to make his boss look good in the history books.
This president is a master of manipulation rather than good governance.

The recent funeral of Gerry Ford reminded me of how far we have come from fairness and moderation in our foreign policy. The danger has always been that as the world's sole superpower with superior military technology, that we would give in to the temptation to abuse that power. Eisenhower wisely warned in 1961 about the growing power of the military-industrial complex, and its push towards involving us in conflict, It appears that has occurred in Iraq.
