BYG wrote "Dean Esmay’s reason to favor a Democratic victory–so he can be smug about their failures–it a symptom of what we face as a culture".

I could see it coming all the way from election night when Tom Delay called the Democrats- a lame duck majority before the results were even in! Our political culture has definitely soured since the days of decent men like Ford and Carter.

Pete's post on Centrism could be a separate post. I came to centrism after swinging back and forth between the two parties for 30 years.

It seems to me that each person we elect brings along their temperament, talent and skills for forging balanced policy. If we elect too many ideologues or partisan then we get gridlock. A campaign to elect 20-50 centrist, deal making, collaborating, open minded candidates in 2008 can help center the Congress as a pragmatic problem-solving body. This seems to be as important as who become President.

Dean Esmay's reason to favor a Democratic victory--so he can be smug about their failures--it a symptom of what we face as a culture. Fantasizing blame for the future is no way to deal with the problems of the present.

Thanks for having open comments, Joe.
